skincare routine!

back when i first joined dw i feel like i saw a decent amount of skincare routine posts so i was like… hm why not share this ? i’m in a pretty chatty mood today and don’t rlly want to discuss fandom shit as much so (&$(@#%

my perspective on “skincare”
idk i think a lot of skincare is kind of a scam (why did i write that out as SKAM at first!!) outside of like chemical exfoliants/prescription stuff + sunscreen but maybe i’m just jaded!!! i actually haven’t tried a lot of the more “pricey” serums or whatever because… [local teen with acne] and also IT’S EXPENSIVE!!! so yes this post is actually not exciting at all. also please don’t judge me too hard <3

also i have no idea how skin types work but i think i had oily skin before um…. well acne meds. you’ll see

AM ROUTINE
  • i just wash my face with water ngl
  • prescription: clindamycin topical lotion — i think this just helps with the active acne i have? no real side effects + it kind of moisturizes my face in the process LOL
  • hydration??? idk: cosrx advanced snail mucin power essence — this is literally just clear snail gel?!?! it’s really hydrating and i like it a lot for the summer because it’s pretty lightweight and doesn’t feel heavy on my skin at all
  • sunscreen: a’pieu pure block sun cream — why have i been using the same sunscreen (multiple bottles) over the past two years!!! it’s so funny because when i ran out of my last tube of it i solicited sunscreen recs on twitter but like… i’m pretty wary about trying out new products + asian sunscreens are Expensive for the amount of product they have + this is always the cheapest thing i can find on amazon TT___TT anyways it’s really moisturizing and has a bit of um… a “shinier” finish but i don’t mind it LOL. and there’s no white cast <3 (important for a brown person like me). idk it’s just dependable and it works… like i considered buying the pure block sun gel this time because it’s less moisturizing but i’m also wary of it containing alcohol bcs that’s more drying?!?! anyways TLDR this works and is cheap and is good

PM ROUTINE
  • why is cleansing so convoluted for me… ok let’s get into this
  • 1st step cleanser: banila co clean it zero cleansing balm — gets rid of makeup and sunscreen really well and is just a classic 1st step cleanser imo… i like cleansing balms so much better than cleansing oils because they’re easier to travel with and don’t count as “liquids” and they’re also fun to use? idk
  • 2nd step cleanser: either cerave acne foaming cream cleanser — my dermatologist told me to use this to deal with acne on my back/chest and i use this if i take a shower at night OR cerave foaming facial cleanser — it’s boring and it works!! cerave is seriously so dependable…
  • prescription:* clindamycin topical lotion + tretinoin cream 0.05% — yeah so the tretinoin is why my skin tends more towards dryness now… i’ve been on it for close to two years now and it’s the biggest factor behind the improvement of my skin imo ;;__;; it really helps with getting rid of hyperpigmentation and just… acne in general? but it does come with two big “side-effects” — dryness/flakiness (which is why i try to add hydration to my routine) and increased photosensitivity (which is why sunscreen is even More important).
  • hydration: cosrx advanced snail mucin power essence
  • sheet mask: just to clarify i do not do sheet masks every day (more like once a week… maybe…?) but this is the place where they go in my routine ^__^ i don’t actually think they do that much but the feeling of a sheet mask after a long hot summer day IS SORT OF UNPARALLELED I THINK!!!
  • >> my beauty diary squalene restorative hydrating mask — wait okay this sheet mask actually Does Things?? like i swear my skin was brighter the day after and it calmed down a bit of redness i had along with the usual hydration effects… but also i’ve only used it once so far so we’ll see ;;___;;
  • >> tosowoong pure propolis mask — these are more affordable than the MBD masks so i use them more often… idt they do much outside of hydration but it’s not like i have huge expectations. as long as it doesn’t break me out and my skin feels better afterwards…
  • sleeping pack: cosrx ultimate nourishing rice overnight spa mask — i actually repurchased a tube of this recently… it’s super nice and basically feels like a slightly thicker lotion (it kind of has a bit of a more gel-like texture to me but i’m also bad at describing skincare??) on my skin. it’s really good at sealing in all of the other layers and my skin is always a lot calmer and softer the next day T__T like sometimes when it’s really hot i’ll skip it because i don’t want to sweat in my sleep and i can tell the difference between using it and not using it LOL

*i was also prescribed an oral antibiotic recently (around mid june?) and it helped a lot with my acne… but then it made my skin really photosensitive / had the unwanted side-effect of causing these insane painful cuts on the corners of my mouth so uh i stopped taking them a couple weeks later. angular cheilitis is actually so serious and terrible and agonizing in the most minor irritating way possible? like it hurt to drink water and smile and do Basic Functions but it’s also stupid because why am i being incapacitated by random cuts on the corners of my lips. so glad they’ve healed <3

random body care aside
idk if this is really relevant to anyone but i started putting LOTION on my LEGS and it sort of changed my life… like seriously i had just never bothered to moisturize before this summer because i didn’t care/didn’t think i had the time for it. but i got really annoyed at ingrown hairs that you get from shaving and looked into it and palmer’s cocoa butter anti-aging lotion is literally that serious T__T i think it's a lotion meant for older people and it does have a bit of a floral haggly smell but a) i like the smell b) if it works it works. also i literally use japanese cherry blossom bath and body works shower gel so yeah my “body care” routine is actually not extensive at all

(not actually) makeup
i am not actually going to get into makeup because i don’t really know anything about it like all of the products i use are just recs solicited from friends. yes i use the glossier blushes. yes i use the tatte concealer. yes i use drugstore eyeliner. etc

…BUT!!!! i am kind of obsessed with lip balm (person with perpetually cracked lips who was also struggling with the aforementioned CUTS ON CORNERS OF MOUTH) so i might as well get into this just a little bit <3
  • kiehl’s lip balm #1, mango — THIS WAS THE ONLY THING THAT HELPED WITH MY ANGULAR CHEILITIS!!! like seriously i thought my lips were never going to heal and i’d just live with that stinging pain every time i brushed my teeth/ate food/drank water/did anything ever for the rest of my life! but then i applied this constantly and it helped >__< the texture kind of reminds me of a thinner petroleum jelly and it smells like mangos and it’s kind of perfect… not super great for “makeup” or w/e because it isn’t tinted but it heals the lips which is the most important thing anyways
  • burt’s bees tinted lip balm, pink blossom — i really like this color but it wears off easily, doesn’t do much for my lips, and also… if you have perpetually chapped lips like me i feel like the tinted color is actually sort of unflattering/highlights patchiness. probably bcs of how thin the consistency is? idk
  • nivea smoothness lip care — this is so bad. like soo, so so bad. i bought it from the drugstore a while back because i wanted lip balm with spf in it, but it’s just… like it isn’t scented or tinted or anything AND it makes my chapped lips worse. this has no redeeming qualities!!!
  • laniege lip glowy balm, peach — this is the most recent lip balm i’ve bought (and actually used) so far. it’s honestly kind of a splurge for me and i bought it because a) i was looking for a new lip balm b) i had heard a lot about the laniege lip sleeping mask thing but that seemed even more expensive + i don’t even like lip balms that come in tub packaging anyways. anyways this has the most delicious scent ever and i love the texture of it — it’s like runnier than the kiehl’s lip balm but it’s still thick and it fills in the lines on my lips. also the color out of the tube is vaguely peach but it doesn’t really tint my lips?? idk i really like it. though, i do have to admit that when i quit kiehl’s lip balm and just started applying this full-time my angular cheilitis briefly worsened… so uh
things i am going to try…
as in i've already ordered them and there's no going back
  • hada labo hyaluronic acid bubble foaming cleanser — i need a new boring cleanser to replace the og boring cleanser from cerave… it seems similarly dependable and harmless and i hope that it’s a suitable substitute in my routine
  • lucas papaw ointment — DO NOT INBOX ME!!! but yes i watched the enhypen what’s in my bag youtube clip and i was curious about the lip balm that half the members kept on raving about T__T it’s not that expensive so i was like ok might as well ($*@&#*%(
  • chapstick total hydration lip oil, subtle pink — i’ve been meaning to buy a lip oil for a while, mostly because i already have a lot of lip balm and i want a decent tinted product for when i feel like doing makeup? i hate lipstick and lip gloss but i’m hoping that lip oil might be more up my alley!! this looked like it had good reviews so i’m crossing my fingers that it works for me

okay yeah i think that's it!!!

yeah u have perfect taste <3 sometimes being brown girl with acne is soooo deeply annoying actually and dealing with like . random things like Body Hair and random aunties commenting on the darkness / lightness of ur skin etc ,, i know it's not that deep but it feels so personal!!!! dealing with it Sucks !!!! it really sucks !!!!!! i don't really have anything substantial to comment, i just wanted to say T__T i understand and i'm sending hugs and also u have such good taste in products and also there is a hypothetical alternate reality in which i never have to think about the hair on my arms and i am happy <3

i LOVE reading abt skincare so thank u for contributing to this void on dw <3

i’ve been debating the cosrx advanced snail mucin power essence so im glad to hear that you like it and also am so impressed by your sheet masking btw… literally just went and dug out the bunch that i’ve had sitting around for years and put one on. ALSO KIEHL’S LIP BALM IS SERIOUSLY THE BEST THING EVER <333333 my favorite flavor is the pear flavor but they don’t sell that in the US so whenever we’re abroad we stock up on it like crazy. there is a bag full of it currently sitting in my fridge right now because it’s That important to us,

thank u for sharing esp in spite of hesitations! i enjoyed reading immensely <3

i remember seeing the pear flavor in pretty much every duty-free shop in an airport as long as that airport wasn't in the US! it was definitely in china/japan/korea but i'm not so sure for other countries.
